Representative Hermina M. Morita was elected to the House of Representatives in 1997 for the 12th District, which includes Hanelai, Kilauea, Anahola, and Kapaa on Kauai and Haiku, Keanae, Nahiku and Hana on Maui - a so-called "canoe" district. She serves as Chair of the Energy & Environmental Protection Committee and as a member of the Judiciary & Hawaiian Affairs, Consumer Protection and Commerce, Water and Land Use committees.

In 1997, in recognition of her past achievements, she was awarded the prestigious Arthur S. Flemming Fellowship given to emerging political leaders in the country. She was the second legislator in Hawaii to receive this nationally recognized award. In June 2002 she received an honorable mention as a finalist for the Good Housekeeping Award for Women in Government. In addition to her committee assignments, Representative Morita is co-chair of the Women’s Legislative Caucus and a member of the Hawaiian and Keiki Caucuses. She is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Energy of the National Conference of State Legsilature’s Energy Project. She has been selected as “Legislator in Residence” within the College of Social Science, University of Hawaii, Manoa for the 2002 Fall Semester.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Representative Morita is a full-time legislator. Her husband, Lance Laney, is a drywall and plaster contractor. They have two young adult daughters, Misha and Mindy. Hanalei Valley, on the island of Kauai, is the home of the Laney family for over twenty years.
